entered a new age, the age of TERROR! Now a very few evil people can
hold individuals, nations, and the world to ransom. People are suspicious
of politics, with good
reason; wary or disgusted with the way many religious people seem to
use their
beliefs to intrude, intimidate, bully, or even as an excuse to cause
murder and mayhem. Health,

IS
THE WAY TO SUCCESS A “SECRET”? As
kids, we were always dying to know what the ‘secret’ was that those other children
were not telling us about. As adults, the very idea of
a ‘secret’ draws
us into wanting to know what it is. Now
the questions have started. Is it this? Is it that? What IS the
“secret”?? Is it “The Law of Attraction”? or The “Law of
Manifestation”, or “Affirmations”,
or of “Positive Thinking”? This
degree of public attention was bound to produce its new crop of
metaphysical entrepreneurs who offer to tell us the inside ‘secrets’ of
the
“secret”. They claim to have the inside scoop. They say they can tell
us “What
the Masters did not tell you!” They
ply us with promises of telling us, for a
fee of course, that they will reveal all the good, important ‘really
secret’ stuff
that you have not yet been told, and it is all in their material. The
real SECRET to success in life is not a “secret” at all! Everything
you need to know about creating wealth, health and happiness is all out
there,
as an “open secret” – for FREE! Those
who would promise quick and easy ways, a special “law” that if
only you knew it, you can have anything and everything you have ever
wanted,
all you have to do is……. do not tell you it is all out there for you,
for
nothing! Look,
is true success ever “quick”? Is there such a thing as “easy money”?
Well, maybe, but usually if any way to “easy” riches looks “too good to
be
true” IT IS!! Or you have to break many laws to get it. Here
is one “law” of success: Break laws,
eventually, they break you. OK.
If I tell you, you can be a world ranking pianist, and all you have
to do is to buy my ”secrets”. I’ll teach you the quick and easy way to
buy a
piano, learn how to press the 88 keys in the order it tells you on the
music,
and hey presto!! There you are, you’ll soon be a success as a concert
pianist.
Would you believe me? No!
Probably not. It takes years of study, tens of thousands of hours of
practice, probably several music teachers, self-discipline, a mentor or
coach,
and your own dedication to your purpose and goals over many years. Even
then
your success will be in direct proportion to your ability, application,
determination, courage, and all the other positive values it is vital
to bring
to the job of becoming a successful concert pianist. It
is the same story with achieving true success in this life. It takes
a lot of study, research, application, yes, and that dirty word
‘self-discipline’ to make a success of your life. Accumulating wealth,
‘stuff’,
and the physical trappings of wealth is only a small part of becoming a
successful human being. You also have to guard, attain and maintain
good
health. There is no point in any of it if you are not happy!! So
why am I telling you this? Well, I am offering to save you a lot of
time. Over fifty years of research have gone into my book, “How
To Make Your Life Work Better, and be Wealthier,
Healthier and Happier.” When
asked, those who claim to have ‘mastered’ the “secret” will offer
new ‘insights’, many new aspects to understanding the ‘secret’.
Interestingly,
it has been observed that these ‘masters’ do not all agree. But even
this has
been lauded as a good thing. Life would be dull and boring if everyone
agreed
wouldn’t it? I
don’t think so. It is a good job that aspects of many of the laws we
live by are agreed by one and all to be “absolute” and certainly not a
matter
of opinion. Which laws? The unseen laws that concern gravity,
aerodynamics,
electricity, chemistry, physics, structural stability, speed and
inertia, to
mention but a few. Anyone
who sits around and uses metaphysical speculative or abstract
reasoning to argue the merits and demerits of these proven laws is
wasting
their time and energy. (Dictionary
definition: metaphysical: excessively subtle reasoning,
immaterial, incorporeal, super-natural) No matter how plausible their
reasoning, those who practice this branch of philosophy are on
dangerous ground
if they attempt to re-invent and apply their own interpretation of how
these
laws should be applied. They
say that history repeats itself. There is no doubt that all this
interest in things metaphysical is very similar to the public intrigue
that centred
around the group of Greek philosophers who lived just over two thousand
years
ago. The writings and thinking of Pythagoras, Socrates, Aristotle,
Plato, and a
large group of other ‘thinkers” form the basis of a large proportion of
modern
‘philosophical’ thought. Metaphysical
philosophy could be a confusing, contradictory, insecure
route towards understanding the true ‘secrets’ of a successful life. Our
ability to think and reason depends to quite a large extent on our
vocabulary. In fact, a study of the relative prosperity and success of
different cultures might be correlated to the number of words in common
use in
their language. Consulting a dictionary frequently to learn about the
meaning
and the origin of words is a very worthwhile habit to develop. For
instance, the meanings given of the word Metaphysical are very
revealing. Metaphysical:
Based on speculative or abstract reasoning. Too
abstract, excessively subtle, immaterial, incorporeal Do
you really want to base the way you run your life on the speculative
and abstract thinking of ‘philosophers’ who have such wide ranging
subtle,
immaterial ideas? Philo – love (Philanthropy –
love of mankind) Greek Sophos or Sophia: Skilled
or clever Greek Sophia: Wisdom (Sophocles
495-496 BC) Sophism:
Deceptive but Plausible fallacious argument. Sophist:
a scholar skilled in devious argumentation Sophistry:
Plausible but faulty reasoning. So
it pays to be extremely careful, and discern by study whether the
words of those who claim to be philosophers are honest and true, and
that they are
setting forth truth, or whether they are using subtle, plausible,
enticing, but
fallacious arguments which in reality have no truth in them. The
Greek school of philosophers that were extant over two thousand
years were known for their self-serving, appealing, plausible, subtle
proclamations, and their over inflated egos, and their moral turpitude.
Socrates was executed for perverting the young! Yet
the word ‘philosopher’ conjures up a somewhat urbane individual, a
scholar, who is philosophical and remains calm under trying
circumstances,
perhaps even someone who is sophisticated. What
does the dictionary say about Sophisticated? Sophisticated:
Having acquired worldly knowledge. Lacking simplicity and
naiveté, urbane, cultured. And the verb…. To
Sophisticate: to cause to become less natural, make less true,
genuine or honest, to corrupt, pervert, or adulterate. So
in the process of studying “secrets”, listen carefully to the words
of those who would offer you the esoteric truths that are hidden from
view. Carefully
analyse their arguments, and examine them for the truth they may
contain, and
you will find that those grains of truth are all too often mingled with
false
arguments and conclusions. Partial
truths about any aspect of life can be lethal. Have you ever
listened to a salesman extolling the wonderful features of a motor car?
Everything he tells you may be true. When you get the car home, or when
you
have driven it for a while, how many people find out the hard way about
what
the salesman omitted to tell you. When we get only a part of the story
in any
realm of life, we are in an invidious and risky position, especially if
we act
on partial knowledge if other ‘truths’ have not been explained to us. Be
aware that a combination of truth and error can be a deadly mixture.
“All that glisters is not gold” and the shiny, tantalising statements
that
purport to tell you how you can get all you want in this life just
by….. are
frequently at best half-truths, or partial truths, mixed with a lot of
conjecture, and unfounded opinions. We
human beings are governed by many powerful, unseen, spiritual laws.
Our success and failure in life are linked to the degree we are in
harmony with
these laws. The more we use them to guide our conduct through life, the
more
successful we will be. One
of the unfortunate emphases of the “secret” is to suggest that
everything we want in this life is to be had just for the asking. In a
way this
is true, and it is not a complete truth. Many statements made by
proponents of
the “secret”, promise that simply by following its principles, success
unlimited is there for the taking. But
is this true, or is it a plausible, glittering, specious, false
generality? The evidence is there for you to examine. Study the
“secret”, even
the “secrets of the secret” and see if you find it simple, easy to
understand,
and effective in helping you achieve the success you desire in the
timeframe
you have set. What
exactly is success? What constitutes a successful life? Prosperity
and the acquisition of physical things is certainly a part of being a
success,
but only a part. Without concern for others, a constant striving to
gain and
maintain harmony with spiritual laws that ensure the development of
good
character, we don’t add up to much. It
has been asked, “What is the point of anyone who in the process of
gaining
the whole world, loses themselves in the process?” Human
beings have the gift of CHOICE. We can either pursue positive
values, or we can embrace negative values, or we can live in
unconscious
ignorance of the reality of the effect of law. If
we CHOOSE actively to pursue positive values, then we develop good
character, and a measure of success that is proportionate to our
attitude and
our ability to make the right choices. If
we either CHOOSE actively to pursue negative values, or through
ignorance, fail to use the positive natural laws of life, then our
failure as a
human being will be in proportion to our wrong attitude and conduct. True
success is attainable. It is a step by step process of studying the
right values, and making the right decisions. Yet,
we can observe those who flaunt most of the positive spiritual
values most of the time, apparently succeeding in making the majority
of the world
work the way they seem to want it. On
a global scale, mankind has broken the natural physical laws of ecology
by the extent of deforestation and the massive burning of fossil fuels.
This has
resulted in the slippery slope of global warming. Our reckless
disregard for
the delicate ecological balance is also leading to the extinction of
thousands
of species. Internationally,
the daily news shows despots ruining entire countries; Governments
waging war which kill thousands; ruling politicians who implement
policies that
cause poverty and famine run rampant in many countries. The
majority of the world’s tragic activities the newscasters present us
with are the end result of the almost universal breaking of the
positive spiritual
laws by the billions due to ignorance and wilful stupidity. Nobody
needs to remain in ignorance. We can help you cut through the
maze of confusing and conflicting information, and make clear the real
‘secrets’ of success in simplicity. You
can either be tempted by the new “secrets” offered by metaphysics which
offers the quick and easy way to “get
rich” and “get everything you want”. Or
you can be among those who give
to the matter of becoming a success in this world a painstaking job of
patient
learning, of testing and proving, of implementing true values. Join
those who
practice a wholesome way of giving
and receiving, and in the process add to their own joy and store of
life’s good
things, but also enrich the lives of all those around them. The
vast majority of people want the easy life. They follow the crowd.
They apply little mental or physical effort to learning how to make
their lives
more fulfilling. They would rather let others think for them, the
politicians,
clerics, gurus, and philosophers. It is so much easier, far less
hassle, to go
along with what all those around you believe, think is right, and
practice. It
takes a strong fish to swim against the current. It takes courage to
stop following the ‘sheep’. It takes effort to study, to learn, to
discern the
good from the bad. Although some philosophers, both ancient and modern,
would
have you believe that there is no such thing as good and bad, or right
and wrong,
and condescendingly say that of course if you choose to be judgemental
and look
at things in that way, that is up to you! If
ever there was a plausible, but fallacious and
dangerous proposition, it is that! Even
more preposterous is the suggestion of some ‘thinkers’ that we are
gods, and that we actually created the reality of this world in all its
wonder
and perfection, its balance and diversity with our minds! Well as they
say, if
you believe that, you will believe anything. However,
this notional statement is actually a horrendous distortion of
a profound truth concerning the potential of human beings. The sum
total of the
best of all the wonderful things we humans have been able to create
like
planes, trains, and other wonderful inventions, is more than
counterbalanced by
the chaos and destruction of fauna and flora of the planet wreaked by
man! It
also takes courage to chart your own course. It takes real guts to make
changes in the way you look at things, and consequently change the way
you act. Why
are we here? What is the purpose of human existence? The
Earth is a school, a training ground where we can either learn to
develop
good character, and qualify for a permanent life in the future, or fail
to
qualify by reason of the choices we make through this life. We
have been given free will to choose our pathway in life. There are
three sorts of people. 1.
We can grow in knowledge, understanding and wisdom of the positive
spiritual values, and develop right habits and good character. By doing
so, we
will add ‘good’ to this world and to all with whom we have to do, and
when we
die we leave the planet a better place for our being here. 2.
Or, like the vast majority, we can just drift along with the crowd,
learning little, doing little to benefit ourselves or others, taking up
space,
using precious resources without thought, living a somewhat meaningless
existence, and adding nothing to this world. 3.
Or we can bend and break the laws which govern health, wealth and
happiness, and cheat a little, lie a little, steal a little, wreck the
planet a
little, makes lots of money and accumulate a lot of things, and in the
process destroy what little character we had in the first
place, and die leaving the world in a worse state as a result of our
being
here. These
three types of people can choose whether to respect and honour
Mother Earth, and “dress it and keep it”, just use what is here for our
benefit, or systematically spoil it and destroy its beauty and its
incredibly
perfect ecological balance. On
a personal level, while on this earth, we have a big job to do with
our minds and hearts. Firstly,
we are here to observe the way most of the world has become
through mankind’s tragic efforts, and decide that overall, this is no
way for
anyone to live. Secondly,
we are here to learn to push against the tendency of our human
nature which, if we allow it, will drag us down into all forms of
depravity. We
are to resist taking the easy way of giving in to, and practising
negative
values, and develop positive traits. Thirdly,
we are to battle constantly to encourage our human spirit aspire
to greater, higher things, and build strong, fine, upright character.
This will
prepare us to face all the wonderful things the future can hold for us. This
is why we are here, and these are the choices we are forced to make.
There is one thing in which we have no choice, and that is we have to
choose! This
paper has presented in short form, some of the details of the If
